Actor Ajith Kumar will be thanked by many women for making people finally realise what consent is.
Consent means permission for something to happen. Permission can be given or denied. When it is denied, it means one can’t go further with the acts.
You can teach all this and yet, men can misunderstand when a girl says no. They can’t hear the obvious answer, but analyse the state of the girl or the environment and blame it. They don’t realise this as a mistake when the victim says so, but when a movie(Nerkonda Paarvai) is made with a man shouting ‘when a woman says no, it means no’ in it, they are all blessed with divine realisation. Another example is a famous Tamil movie reviewer who applauded the accused’s lawyer in the movie for advocating victim blaming.Â
The misogyny at it’s peak is when three reviewers in Youtube justify the gore acts of the accused in the movie by blaming the victimised girls for being drunk and having consensual premarital sex.Â
‘Asking for it’, ‘men are men’ are few of the terms associating to victim blaming. Lets come to ‘asking for it’. One can never make sense of this statement yet, it’s used as a mandatory way of defense for the molesters and rapists.
When a vault is left unlocked and its robbed, whose fault is it? Its the robber’s. When the vault is locked and its robbed, now whose fault is it? Again the robber’s.
It’s as simple as that. In the case of sexual assault, the crime is not against a material but a living, breathing human being and consent plays a huge role. So, it’s an inexcusable comparison but very necessary to demolish the ‘asking for it’ appeal.
The irony here is, a huge misogynistic population, who refused to give an ear when women tried to explain consent, are now promoting 'no means no' after an iconic 'hero' said it. However, we are grateful to the actor for delivering the message.
