'Gorilla' Film Review: A heist comedy that doesn’t evoke laughter
The much-delayed Gorilla, a comic heist film directed by Don Sandy that has Jiiva and Shalini Pandey in lead roles finally hit the screens on Friday. The film that begins with a narrative on how three youngsters befriend a chimp from a research lab is a disappointment all through.
Chennai
The story is about the youngsters planning to loot a bank in a bid to get rich. They are accompanied by a farmer who comes to Chennai seeking a better future. They watch several Hollywood heist flicks to conceive ideas. Once they enter the bank, we are introduced to several characters, who contribute nothing to the screenplay and their body shaming comedies and one liners fall flat.
What makes things worse for Gorilla is that, without any story or character connect, it is another Tamil movie that cashes in on the farmers’ woes, which looks too contrived and makes for a tedious watch. We wonder why the film needs a chimp as it is seen lazing around on the couch seemingly uninterested just like us watching the film. Gorilla is illogical as there is a dozen policemen pointing guns at Jiiva who threatens everyone with a dummy gun. We know what the climax has in store for us. The audience know too as they start walking out of the theatres even before the climax begins. But as a reviewer, I had no choice but to sit through the 128-minute film that will be an exhausting watch in television if it is aired on an upcoming festival day.
