They discussed with us quite a few topics related to Tamil cinema before director Andrew Louis and music director Simon K King joined us. Though the film has been bankrolled by Pradeep of Diya Movies, Dhananjayan is releasing the film under his banner BOFTA Media Works. He breaks the ice and begins, “I was supposed to produce the film. At that point in time, I had other films under various stages of production and Vijay Antony said that he will go ahead with the film. I agreed to join him in the later stages. I was impressed with the script, but I didn’t want the team to wait for me. So far, I have watched the film eight times and have screened it to my close circle of friends, to whose criticism I am always open to. They have all heaped praise on the final product.”

Vijay Antony, who is known for his unique choice of scripts, says, “Content matters the most. However, the timing of the release is equally important. The success of the film hugely depends on how and who releases it.” The actor-composer who played a cop in Thimiru Pudichavan plays a serial killer in this film. Talking about his approach in choosing films, he says, “Choosing a script is like watching a film in a theatre. Last week I would have watched a cop film and there will be another one releasing this week. However, I would prefer watching a comic flick. This is an organic process that applies to the audience as well an artiste. This script came to me at the right time and I grabbed the opportunity. I played a cop in Thimiru Pudichavan and I am playing a cop in my next couple of films because they are great content. Likewise, I have played anti-hero roles in Saithan, Naan and even Anna Durai but Kolaigaran is special. It is about a guy who goes on a killing spree to live with the girl he likes — even her parents or her husband. Did I just reveal the suspense?”

Andrew says, “It’s okay Vijay. They do not know that this was pre planned,” says director Andrew. “There are several other suspense elements in this two-hour film. Even before you realise, there will be an interval and in the next hour the film will be over. It is a non-linear script which will still have its own commercial elements in the right place,” he adds. Dhananjayan says, “While promoting Kolaigaran, we paid tribute to 20 thrillers in Tamil cinema. We finished the promotion with Thadam. I am sure Kolaigaran will be a milestone thriller in Tamil cinema.” Simon King, who has been lauded for his music in the sneak peek teaser and trailer says that it was easy and at the same time the script helped him to give a quality output. “The movie was already made when I joined the project and Andrew made my work easier,” he says. We ask Simon if Vijay Antony, a composer himself, had pitched in with his suggestions. “No, he was focused on acting,” he replied. “Enaku music theriyaadhu nu Simon ku theriyum (Simon knows that I have no knowledge in music,” laughs Vijay Antony. Dhananjayan and Andrew chorused saying, “Vijay Antony is like the bright student who gets an additional paper during examination but always pretend that he will flunk.” As we finish, Vijay Antony’s fans have gathered outside to click selfies with him and he obliges them.
