Having weathered many storms in his business and sports life, he said, “Turbulence can hit an individual working anywhere – in a corporate, in politics in sports or any sphere. Lead by example as one wrong decision can set you back by 20 years. So, the ability to sense the reality and deal with it factually, are needed. Determination and hard work are the hallmark of success.”
Delivering the 37th IIT Madras & EFSI Endowment Lecture 2019 on ‘Leadership in Turbulent Times’ at the IIT Madras Campus recently, Srinivasan said “Technology is changing rapidly. Unless you understand turbulence, be conscious of what is happening around and find a solution, it will be difficult to survive.”
Citing the instance of how Chennai Super Kings, the most successful IPL franchise to be hit by turbulence with a two-year ban but still staging a comeback in 2018, he exhorted management students to learn from the grit and determination of team CSK and its captain, MS Dhoni.
“Dhoni and CSK dealt with it on merit and with single-minded focus and it took us to victory,” Srinivasan said, listing out various global and domestic instances, when leadership triumphed during rough times. The most significant development was World War II, when several heroes volunteered and fought historic battles, by turning themselves into leaders and achieving victories for their countries. In the corporate sector, the Ford Mustang sports car, introduced by Ford Motor Company, was a great innovation and it turned the company’s fortunes around, Srinivasan sought to highlight.
