Logistics to fast-track employment in Chennai
The infrastructure status and the subsequent investment coupled with GST implementation will boost the growth of the Rs 14,19,000 cr logistics industry in India to 10.5% CAGR, states a report titled Indian Logistics Revolution – Big Bets, Big Jobs

Infrastructure status
Accorded to the Logistics sector in 2017 is second most important growth driver. This will improve access to low cost, long-term credit
GST implementation would formalise the sector and bring in operational efficiency
Macro-economic and regulatory factors will transform the sector and improve its global competitiveness, thereby reducing logistics costs from 14.4% of GDP by about 2%
CITY SCENARIO
- 2.45 lakh new jobs
- To be created in Chennai through seven sub-sectors of logistics. This is due to infrastructure and public investment, industry evolution and consumption
The seven sub-sectors are:
Road | Rail freight | Air freight | Warehousing | Waterways | Packaging | Courier services
Incremental employment creation (2018-2022)
- 1,30,215 jobs in road freight to be created from construction of arterial road network connecting Nemilichery, Nallur and Minjur and the proposal of Bengaluru-Chennai Expressway
- 50,000 jobs in waterways from growth of cargo in ports and ease of doing business, the government’s initiative to modernise and develop ports to ‘Hub Locations or Coastal Economic zones’
- 40,000 jobs in Air Freight owing to the economic growth and evolving regulation, rising outsourcing, high infrastructure investment and easier customer clearance
- 7,000 jobs in the rail freight sub- sectors via the expansion of Chennai metro corridor – from Washermanpet to Chennai Central Station and Chennai International Airport will create opportunities and thousands of jobs across all sub-sectors of Logistics in Chennai region
- 8,000 jobs in warehousing, 4,000 in packaging and 6,000 from courier services
- Creation of multimodal logistics parks and logistics clusters to enhance freight transport
- Maximum jobs are expected to be created at the junior level with some basic skills like interaction with client, analysing business requirement and smart time management and route navigation
- 1.2 lakh is the dearth of skilled people in the junior level across all 7 sub sectors in Chennai which indicates a severe demand supply gap giving ample opportunities for talent mobility into the sector and skill development for the sector
