Cycle-sharing service pedals into IIT Madras
Following the successful launch of bicycle sharing service PEDL in 3 cities – Chennai, Kolkata and Bangalore, Zoomcar is set to expand its PEDL service in different corners of the city. Recently, PEDL marked its entry into IIT Madras by placing cycles at multiple locations in the campus.
Chennai
PEDL, India’s first technology-enabled cycle sharing service has made its foray with an aim to provide individuals a convenient, affordable, and environmentally friendly cycle sharing service for short trips around the city.
The company installed over 100 cycles at IITM campus to be used by students and professors for errand running, moving around the campus and last mile commuting. At scale PEDL will be present in every 50-100 meters inside the campus. Already located in Besant Nagar, PEDL will also be available at other universities as well as hyperlocal zones like Adyar and Anna Nagar with almost 400 cycles in next one month. PEDL is designed to complement Zoomcar’s existing car sharing business through serving an additional part of the personal transportation stack.
Greg Moran, CEO & Co-founder, Zoomcar said, “The response to PEDL in Chennai has been overwhelming, with 5,000+ bookings provided over the pilot phase in Besant Nagar. We are hoping students and professors will be thrilled to use our service given the technology we have used. PEDL strongly compliments our core car sharing service as we continue to make a meaningful contribution to air quality improvement across Indian cities. At present, we’re speaking to various governmental bodies to craft policies and design urban infrastructure that will help ensure the responsible propagation of dock-less cycle sharing across the country.”
The process of using a PEDL involves walking up to a location, paying via PayTM, and dropping the cycle off when done at any of the locations. Cycles are priced for the masses at an affordable Rs 10 per half an hour.
