This has enabled it to reach an optimum capacity of 6 lakh units per annum. The two-wheeler major rolled out its one-millionth model from its factory here on Friday, setting the stage for the next leap of growth.
“We plan to expand to 9 lakh annual capacity by March 2018, which will mean an investment of Rs 200 cr,” said Riuji Kawashima, Deputy MD, IYM, noting that already Rs 1,300 cr had been pumped into the facility. Also, 15 per cent of the vehicles produced cater to the export market. IYM’s scooters’ portfolio constitutes bulk of its sales at 70 per cent and the company works on demand and market needs, said Mukesh Kumar, VP, IYM. IYM’s plant head S Kumar, explained the rationale of choosing the location for housing its second plant (IYM’s first plant is in Surajpur).
The maximum demand for scooters is from south, which also accounts for 50 per cent of sales.
Out of 177 acres area, IYM has taken up 109 acres, while 68 acres houses nine of its vendor partners such as Johaku, Sakura, Koyama, Kyowa and KYB in the dedicated park. Here an investment of Rs 760 cr has been made so far. IYM, which has 3,400 employees (80 per cent plus local), has plans to increase hiring and its head-count will touch 4,000 when the two-wheeler maker breaches the 9 lakh production capacity and 5,000 when it gets past 12 lakh mark.
