Dr Agarwal’s Eye Hospitals’ count would reach to 150 by 2020, Head of Medical Services, Telangana Region, Dr Vamshidhar said.
Hyderabad
Talking to newsmen after launching the dedicated Paediatric Department at its Punjagutta Hospital here, Dr Vamshidhar said Dr Agarwal’s has 70 Eye hospitals across the country including 6 in Hyderabad. It was planning to open 80 more eye hospitals over the next four years.
Of them 2-3 hospitals will come up in Telangana during the next one year period. The new department was inaugurated by a two-month-old baby boy Mohith Nanda, whose vision was saved by the doctors of Dr Agarwal’s Eye Hospital.
Dr Vamshidhar said, “Vision is crucial for the holistic development of a child. Around 80 per cent of the learning a child does is through his or her eyes and hence requires dedicated attention and care. This very realization has prompted us to set-up a dedicated department for children’s eye care.”
While explaining Mohith’s case, Dr Vamshidhar said that the infant was born through a normal delivery. Over the days while feeding the infant, the mother realised that the baby had a white reflection in his eyes and was not looking at her as other kids of his age would do.
On detailed examination, the child was found to be having congenital cataract in both the eyes. The cataract was significant enough for immediate surgical intervention. Surgery on an infant as young as two months presents many challenges.
“They have low sclera rigidity, increased elasticity of the anterior capsule and high vitreous pressure making it a highly demanding surgery. However, the team of doctors took up the case. They successfully removed the cataract from both the eyes of the baby.
Today, the child is not only cured of cataract, he is responding well to visual inputs and cues, bringing hope to his family,” he added.
