Human chain event postponed to Oct 11 after police advice

After the CPM, CPI and VCK proposed the human chain on Gandhi Jayanthi, several political parties and non-political organisations including Congress, MDMK, IUML, MMK and Dravidar Kazhagam extended support for it.

CHENNAI: Left and VCK on Saturday announced that the human chain for social harmony which was scheduled to be held on October 2 would be postponed to October 11 following the police request to change the dates for the event considering the prevailing law and order situation in the state.

After the CPM, CPI and VCK proposed the human chain on Gandhi Jayanthi, several political parties and non-political organisations including Congress, MDMK, IUML, MMK and Dravidar Kazhagam extended support for it.

However, the police have denied permission for the human chain citing the prevailing law and order situation in the wake of the ban imposed on the PFI and the denial of permission for the RSS’s march at 50 places in the state. In a joint statement, leaders of the Secular Democratic Front except DMK said that the social harmony human chain was postponed to October 11 after consulting leaders of parties and social movements who extended support to it.

“Police explained the law and situation in the state and reason for denial of permission for October 2 and sought postponement of the event,” they said. They appealed to the public and democratic forces to participate in the peaceful human chain to protect social harmony and continue the campaign against separatist forces trying to create enmity and disturb peace based on religion a success.
