CHENNAI: Known as the God of wealth and knowledge, Lord Ganesha's birthday, Vinayakar Chaturthi is celebrated across the nation and the state today. Praying for prosperity, a Vinayakar temple in Kanchipuram is decorated with money every year on Vinayakar Chaturthi.

After a gap of two years owing to the Covid-19 lockdown, the Yelela Singa Vinayakar temple in Kanchipuram has once again come to life this year for Vinayakar Chaturthi celebrations. The temple is unique for decorating the sanctum sanctorum of the presiding deity Vinayakar with wads of cash.

Denominations from as low as Re 1 to Rs 2,000 is used for decorations. The tradition has been taking place for the past 18 years with an exception to 2020 and 2021 owing to the pandemic and the resultant lockdown. The total amount makes out to Rs 15 lakhs in this years celebration.

Devotees of this temple believe that this kind of a ritual will bring them prosperity and happiness. This ritual being the temple's special attraction, the faithful across the state visit the temple on the occasion of Vinayakar Chaturthi.
