COIMBATORE: Police said the notorious criminal Jaildar Singh, 56, from Punjab jumped bail and was on the run for the last eight years. On 12 September, 2002, the gang murdered the Congress functionary and decamped with 200 sovereigns of gold jewellery from his house in Salem.

A special team led by the then Inspector General of Police (North Zone) SR Jangid had cracked down upon the Bawaria gang with the arrest of nine people in coordination with police from Haryana, Rajasthan, Punjab and Madhya Pradesh in connection with the case. They confessed to having been involved in multiple heinous crimes across Tamil Nadu. Later, the movie ‘Theeran Adigaaram Ondru’ was based on ‘Operation Bawaria’ carried out by the TN police.

Police said Jaildar Singh failed to honour the bail conditions and went into hiding since 2014. Therefore, the court issued an arrest warrant and Salem City Police Commissioner Najmul Hoda formed a special team to nab the absconding accused. Jaildar Singh, who came to Teynampet police station in Chennai to sign in for another case, was arrested by the Salem police on Wednesday. The police brought him to Salem and lodged him in Salem Central Prison after he was produced in court on Friday.
