Perhaps, people in Coimbatore and across Tamil Nadu may have to pay more property tax than those in Chennai, if the proposed hike is implemented in toto.

COIMBATORE: “This proposed hike is discriminatory. Except in Chennai, there was a property tax revision across the State in 2008 and people here are already paying the enhanced tax over the last 14 years. Being so, yet another tax revision will bring in more disparity,” said K Kathirmathiyon of Coimbatore Consumer Cause.

Property tax was last raised in Chennai and across Tamil Nadu in 1998. Within the next ten years, the property tax was hiked again everywhere except in the Greater Chennai Corporation limits. Therefore, the present hike in property tax will be the second for other regions in the last 24 years.

“Even though the current revision is less than Chennai, the people in Coimbatore will be forced to pay more. Ironically, it would be like a person running a hotel in a rural part of Coimbatore paying more tax than a hotelier doing business on the busy Mount Road in Chennai,” he said.
