Police said Murugan, 31 and Kavitha, 22, both hailing from Tirunelveli had sold the baby fearing that they may not be able to raise their only child due to poverty. “The couple, who were in love, got married a year ago braving stiff opposition from their families. They then left their house. They were suffering without money to meet even their day to day expenses,” police said.

Meanwhile, Kavitha delivered the baby at CMCH on August 31. With constant fears over raising the child, Murugan decided to sell off the child with the consent of his wife.

They sold the infant to Viswanathan, 40 and Viji, 34 from Keeranur in Tirupur for Rs 10,000, a few days ago. After investigations, police arrested Kavitha, Viswanathan and Viji, while a search was on for Murugan.
