The Union government had passed the CAA in the Parliament to provide Indian citizenship to non-Muslims entering the country from Pakistan, Bangladesh and Afghanistan. As per the Act, citizenship will be given to people who came to India before December 31, 2014. Opposition parties, including Congress and DMK, are against the CAA and several Muslim groups are staging a continuous protest.
In this backdrop, Thanthi TV reporters conducted a survey covering around 1,580 people in urban and rural areas to know the pulse of the State.
When asked what they think about the opposition parties’ demand for adopting a resolution against CAA in the State assembly, 41.5 per cent respondents said that the demand is reasonable. Around 58.5 per cent opined that the demand is purely a vote bank politics.
However, while 36.7 per cent of participants agreed to the State government’s claim, 44.1 per cent people said the assurance is for gaining political mileage. Around 19.2 per cent refused to respond.
Also, 70.7 per cent respondents think the Delhi riots are blasphemy to the nation’s secularism while 29.3 per cent respondents thought otherwise. Around 15 per cent of people refused to respond.
The survey also revealed that 64.1 per cent people in the State know about the CAA, while 21.3 per cent are clueless. Around 14.6 per cent people came to know about the Act only after the political parties ran a campaign.
