The Election Bill 2017 was passed with a majority vote by the Senate after rejecting the amendments from the Pakistan People's Party through which the legal bar on a person to serve as an office-bearer of a political party if he is disqualified will "set to go", reported popular daily 'Dawn'.

The draft legislation was passed with the help of two opposition parties - the Muttahida Qaumi Movement and Balochistan National Party-Mengal, the report said.

Significantly enough, the bill was passed on a day ousted Pakistan Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif had suffered a major setback after Pakistan's anti-graft body 'The Accountability Court' froze the bank accounts and seized the properties of him and his family members.

In view of the charges of corruption and money laundering as reflected in the Panama Papers 'scandal', Mr Sharif has already stepped down after the Supreme Court disqualified him on July 28 from continuing in his office.
