Police said on Saturday, the sexagenarian woman Ponni (65) was attending a temple festival at Muthialpet when she felt that someone had snatched her chain in the crowd.

She immediately alerted the Muthialpet police who questioned a woman found to be in a suspicious circumstance.

They later recovered the chain from the woman identified as Mathi (26) hailing from Coimbatore. She was arrested, produced before a local court and remanded to judicial custody.

Police are on the lookout for her accomplices as they are sure that she belongs to a gang which landed in Puducherry.

During festival seasons, thieves also used to visit, posed as tourists by forming a gang and spread to different areas to commit the crime, police said.
