With the raise of mercury in Tamil Nadu, Kodiyakkarai sanctuary in Nagapattinam district has been severely affected by water scarcity, forcing the protected animals to migrate from the sanctuary in search of water.

The 23 sq kms wide-spread sanctuary shelters several wild lives, including jackal, wild boar and black-napped hare. The sanctuary contains 56 small ponds and several sumps to cater the needs of the animals.

All the ponds in the sanctuary dried owing to the poor rainfall in the region. Forest department took several measures to address this water crisis, including supplying water through tanker lorries.

The visitors number also declined due to the sweltering summer.
