WATCH: Roads waterlogged, shops shut playgrounds flooded: Rain brings Chennai to a standstill

After heavy spells, the shutters of Red Hills and Chembarambakkam reservoirs were opened on Tuesday to release 500 cusecs of surplus water following heavy rainfall in catchment areas.

As incessant rain lashed Chennai since Monday evening, several parts of the city were flooded with rainwater causing hardships to residents on Tuesday. 

The overnight spells led to inundation in many low lying areas in the city like Velachery, Madipakkam, Saidapet, KK Nagar, Adambakkam, Anna Nagar, Kodungaiyur, Vysarpadi, Perambur, Purasaiwalkam, Kellys and suburbs surrounding Tambaram.

As drains overflowed due to incessant rainfall on Tuesday, pedestrians in Ram Nagar, Velachery were forced to wade through the sewage water. Velachery, like most other parts of Chennai, experienced flooding after hours of heavy downpour.

5. Santhome High Road in Chennai flooded amidst heavy rainfall

Santhome High Road, like several other major roads in Chennai, was flooded following heavy rainfall on Tuesday. Traffic slowed to a crawl and at one time, motorists had to drive through water and around an abandoned, floating dustbin.

6. MTC buses in Mandaveli bus depot continue to ply amidst heavy rainfall

Despite heavy rainfall, MTC buses continued to ply from waterlogged Mandaveli bus depot on Tuesday. Incessant showers have caused flooding in several parts of Chennai.
