Watch FM Nirmala’s interview on Thanthi TV

The money that the people and government are spending on fuel is draining to foreign coffers, as India is largely dependent on import of oil from abroad, said Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman, adding that relying more on public transport and shunning private vehicles was one way of reducing the burden.

Speaking to Thanthi TV during an interview, the Finance Minister urged the people to choose public transport services like Metro Rail. In the future, the thrust is more on electric powered vehicles, which would reduce the present fuel price burden while also bringing down the dependency on oil imports. During the interview soon after presenting her maiden budget, Nirmala spoke to Thanthi TV about wide-ranging topics, including the reason behind wrapping the budget document in a hand-woven red cloth and the political situation in Tamil Nadu, actor Rajinikanth’s entry into politics and the election to Vellore Lok Sabha constituency.
