While 128 routes were sanctioned in March last, this time they received 141 applications for 502 routes. Of these, 90 applications for 325 routes were selected.

This second list included Vellore, where private operator Turbo Aviation has been given permission to operate flights on the Vellore - Chennai and Vellore- Bangalore routes.

Thanjavur to Chennai

Similarly, Spicejet has received sanction to operate flights from Thanjavur to Chennai. Official sources said that unless an airport needed up-gradation, operations were scheduled to start within six months of the sanction.

It may be recalled that civil aviation secretary RN Choubey had visited Chennai some months ago specifically to hold discussions with top officials on this issue, following which AAI (Airports Authority of India) officials inspected the Vellore aerodrome, located at Abdullapuram, on the Chennai-Bangalore highway.

Hyderabad-based operator, Truejet, had initially shown willingness to operate on the Chennai-Vellore-Tirupathi route in both directions.
