CHENNAIThe under-construction MRTS elevated track collapsed near Adambakkam on Thursday evening.

Luckily no human casualties were reported. There was no damage to any property also, railway said.

On Thursday around 6.15 pm while launching the 40-meter-long girder over the elevated alignment between Pier 157 and 158 near Thillai Ganga Nagar subway, using synchronised hydraulic jacks, the girder slipped down on one end due to a failure of the lifting jack on that side.

Luckily there were no casualties and no properties were damaged during the accident since the work was done after diverting the road traffic with the required precautions in place before the launch.

The Southern Railway officials who visited the spot have ordered an investigation into the matter.

The MRTS project connecting Velachery with St Thomas Mount was started 10 years ago but due to some land acquisition issues, the work was halted for many years.

The work for linking the 500 metre lenght from Adambakkam to St Thomas Mount station restarted recently.
