UGC to study performance of colleges after autonomy

The University Grants Commission (UGC), the country’s apex body for higher education, is set to conduct a survey to ascertain the level of autonomy being exercised by colleges in Tamil Nadu.

According to UGC sources here, the commission is keen on promoting autonomous institutions in the country as part of the national policy on education.


The survey, which is set to be conducted in the first week of May, will check whether the colleges had reviewed their existing courses and redesigned the syllabus after the conferment of autonomous status.


The colleges are required to submit a report on whether such restructured courses are skill-oriented to meet the job requirements. The survey will examine new methods adopted by the colleges to assess students’ performance, conduct of examination and notification of results.


Other aspects that are to be examined include whether the governing body, academic council, board of studies and finance committee have been established by the autonomous colleges.


“The institutions are also required to state whether they would be able to prescribe rules for admissions in consonance with the reservation policy of the State and Central governments and admit students at their own level,” UGC sources said, adding that detailed information about the institution’s various research activities will be sought.


The survey will help the UGC to determine whether the conferment of autonomous status has helped the colleges in promoting healthy practices such as community service, extension activities, evolving projects for benefit of the society at large and neighbourhood programmes. On receipt of a comprehensive survey report, changes would be incorporated in the UGC’s autonomy scheme for the benefit of the students and the institutions.
