Banwarilal Purohit met Corporation commissioner Aneez Sekhar and trainee Collector Ranjith Singh and held discussions with them, official sources said without elaborating.

He flagged off a cleanliness drive as part of Swachch Bharat mission.

Purohit also visited NGO Colony and the Anganwadi centre here and carried out an inspection and served food to the children there.

Earlier, delivering his address at the 51st annual convocation of Madurai Kamaraj University, the Governor urged students to be fair and just and not help those who were unfair and corrupt.

"Students and teachers can take a vow not to help the corrupt people. This is my humble request," he said.

Education minister K P Anbalagan said late chief Minister J Jayalalithaa gave importance to the education sector and introduced several schemes.

During her rule, 65 government colleges were inaugurated, he said adding the present government headed by K Palaniswami was continuing her good work.

The Tamil Nadu government was focusing on giving importance to women's education, he said and added the state as a whole was more advanced in the education sector.

Purohit had faced protests during his visits to some of the districts in the recent months with DMK cadres showing black flags alleging that he was interfering with the state's autonomy.

This charge, however, has been rejected by the Raj Bhavan as well as the ruling AIADMK and BJP.
