Tamil Nadu sees 100 plus new cases for 3rd day in a row, highest single-day spike in Chennai

COVID-19 pandemic continued surge in Tamil Nadu with 161 fresh cases, the highest for a single day so far, being reported on Thursday as the total rose to 2,323, the Health department said.

The state recorded 100 plus cases for the third consecutive day. Out the 161 cases from 11 districts, 138 were from Chennai taking the city's tally to 906.

A two-month old girl baby and an 81-year old man, both from the city, were among those who tested positive on Thursday.

In a statement issued, the Health Department also said that the total number children in the age group 0-12 who are Covid-19 patients stands at 142.

A total of 1,258 people have been discharged in the state after treatment with Chennai again leading the table in number of recoveries, the bulletin said.

The number of active cases is at 1,035.

There were no fresh deaths on Thursday and currently the tally stands at 27.

According to the statement, the total number of samples tested on Thursday was 9,787, taking the tally till date to 119,748.

With the Covid-19 patients increasing in the state capital, the Greater Chennai Corporation has threatened to seal business units for three months if they didn't follow social distancing norms and other regulations to curb spread of coronavirus.

According to Commissioner G. Prakash, special teams would be formed to ensure following of social distancing norms to curb coronavirus infection.

The corporation will deploy resources in a focussed manner and a separate team for containment zone management has been set up. The essentials for people in the containment zone will be provided. Wherever water supply was an issue, water tanks would be installed, he said.

According to him, around 1,250 samples are being tested a day and the number will be raised to 2,000 a day. There are 22,000 beds quarantine facility in the state.

For admitting the mild cases, another 22,000-bed quarantine facility will be readied in 15 days.
