Stop rural work scheme, urge ryots

Officials at the monthly agricultural grievances day held here were taken aback when farmers demanded that the 100-days work scheme for rural areas under the Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Scheme (MGNREGS) be temporarily stopped to ensure availability of labourers for harvesting groundnut crops.

Meanwhile, another section of farmers sought compensation for crops damaged by animals, stating that the current insurance scheme does not cover such damages. Forest officials were unable to respond to the farmers, when they conveyed their problem during the meeting chaired by District Collector SA Raman.

There was also a complaint regarding the lack of access for farmers in the Anaicut BDO and tahsildar office. They pointed out that there was not even a single chair for farmers or visitors to sit. The farmers said the tahsildar was unresponsive to their pleas.
