This is part of a Rs 33 crore-plan to restore Vellore fort. The weeds had obstructed the flow of water in the area and had been an eyesore for visitors and locals.

Located near the Periyar park, the weed cleaning work at the moat started on June 22. A private contractor was entrusted the work to clear accumulated sand from the area and ensure the presence of water from all sides.

Sources from the ASI revealed that the once the work is completed, “water will automatically fill all four sides unlike it happening only when the area receives heavy rain.”

The Vellore fort is a large 16th-century fort situated in heart of the city and was built by Vijayanagara kings. It was the headquarters of the Aravidu Dynasty of the Vijayanagara Empire. The fort is known for its grand ramparts, wide moat and robust masonry.
