Slapgate: Advocate gets bail before being remanded

Advocate Shanmugathan, who was booked under various sections, including Section 4 of the Tamil Nadu Prohibition of Harassment of Women Act for slapping a government nurse posted on the High Court premises here last week, was arrested by Esplanade police on Tuesday.

However, the advocate, a government counsel, got bail even before he was remanded. Police said that the advocate did not cooperate when the cops went to arrest him at his house in Teynampet, he got himself admitted in hospital. 

Before his discharge, the advocated moved the High Court and obtained bail. Shanmuganathan allegedly entered into an altercation with nurse Mahalakshmi (56) at the High Court dispensary on July 5 after he was asked to show his identity card to get some medicines. 

Later, he came back with a group of lawyers and slapped Mahalakshmi following which she filed a complaint with Esplanade All Women Police. 

Meanwhile, Mahalakshmi was transferred to RGGGH, where she underwent treatment.  Earlier on Tuesday, the Tamil Nadu Government Nurses Association expressed satisfaction over the arrest of Shamuganathan.
