Sexual abuse plaint against ruling party functionary

Perambalur police have begun a probe on Monday into the complaint registered by a Naam Tamilar Katchi district secretary against a ruling party functionary in the district and a few others pertaining to a case of sexual harassment and illegal confinement of women.

Naam Tamilar Katchi district secretary and advocate P Arul lodged a complaint, alleging sexual harassment and illegal confinement of women by a gang lead by a ruling party VIP, to the Superintendent of Police Disha Mittal on Sunday. The complaint also requested the name of the functionary to remain undisclosed for appropriate investigation.


Arul detailed in the complaint that a gang confined few young women at a star hotel and sexually harassed them. “At least 20 women were cheated by the gang as the members of the gang video graphed the violation and threatened to circulate the videos on social media. A few of the victims even have attempted to commit suicide,” he said in the complaint.


On Monday, police registered a case against the gang members under various IPC sections including 357 (Wrongful confinement), 506 (I) (Threatening) and section 67 of Information Technology act.


The police have commenced their investigation and a special team has been formed by the SP. The team has interrogated Arul and collected evidences. They also quizzed the star hotel employees and sought the CCTV footage of the hotel.
