A group of seven AIADMK cadre including former Councillors Saravanan and Mani had approached Sathyamurthy, the AMMK functionary, and allegedly asked him to join the ruling party, to which he had refused. So, a heated argument ensued and the group assaulted him. Later, Thanjavur West police detained Sathyamurthy on charges of creating nuisance under the influence of alcohol.

On information, AMMK workers visited the police station and demanded the police to release him. They also raised slogans accusing the police of acting ‘on the instructions of Rajya Sabha MP R Vaithilingam and Thanjavur Assembly candidate Gandhi’, and attempted to lay siege on the station.

Meanwhile, AIADMK ward secretary Murthy, who was present at the spot, was caught recording the demonstration and was reportedly assaulted by the AMMK workers. Later, he was rescued by the police.

The situation escalated after AIADMK functionaries arrived there and an argument ensued between the two groups. Meanwhile, Armed Reserve personnel were rushed there to restore normalcy. Later, Town DSP Ravichandran held talks with both the parties and a case was registered against both the groups based on their complaints.
