Both the Salem and Tirupur district collectors have appealed to people to use umbrellas while stepping out of the house. In a video shared on social media, Tirupur Collector K Vijayakarthikeyan made a fervent appeal to people to take along an umbrella while stepping out of the house for essential works.

“Post the complete lockdown, people coming out of their houses to buy essentials should carry an umbrella to maintain social distancing in public places and prevent ourselves from contracting COVID19,” the collector said.

Explaining further on the concept, the Collector said that the need of the hour is social distancing to safeguard oneself from infection. “By using umbrellas, social distancing becomes a possibility. So everyone should take umbrellas in their hand to protect from the infection,” he said.

Following the announcement by the Collector, several organisations have also come forward to donate umbrella to people to inculcate the habit.

In a similar attempt, Salem Collector SA Raman urged people in Salem to follow the people of Kerala in using an umbrella while coming out of their houses to maintain social distancing. The Thanneermukkom Gram Panchayat in Alappuzha on

Sunday made it mandatory for anyone stepping out to carry an umbrella for maintaining the social distance.
