Rs 82.13 cr allotted to set up veterinary college as part of livestock park

The state on Monday passed a Government Order (GO) for establishing a Veterinary College and Research Institute (VCRI), which will be part of Advanced Institute for Integral Research in Livestock and Animal Sciences (AIIRLAS), in Thalaivasal Koot Road, in Salem district.

According to the GO, “Rs 82.13 crore has been allotted for the establishment of the VCRI. The college will have the capacity of 80 seats out of which 40 seats will be offered initially from 2020-21. From 2021-22, the number of seats will be increased to 80.”


The announcement to set up AIIRLAS was made by Chief Minister Edappadi K Palaniswami on February 13, this year. In the announcement, he said that AIIRLAS would be set up in 900 acres at the total cost of Rs 396 crore and it will the largest park for livestock and animal sciences in Asia.


The proposed AIIRLAS has four wings, including Livestock Farm Complex, Livestock Products Technology Complex, Extension education, skill training and research complex and VCRI.


At present, the state government had cleared permission for VCRI alone and the remaining wings will be set up in following phases.


At present, there are four veterinary colleges in the state and there are 360 seats. The new VCRI will offer Bachelor of Veterinary Science and Animal Husbandry and the total seats will be 80.


Ministers to getonions from Nashik to tide over crisis

The state government on Monday dispatched senior Cooperatives and food department officials to visit Nasik and other onion markets in Maharashtra to procure onion in bulk. A press release from the secretariat said that the state Cooperatives Minister Sellur K Raju and Food Minister Kamaraj conducted a review meeting to check the increasing vegetable prices and a decision was taken to penalise traders hoarding onion in the state.  The government will procure onion from Tuesday and start supplying the vegetable to bring down the prices. The temporary measure will continue till the onion prices are brought down, the release said. It may be noted that the price of onion and tomato has been gliding up-to Rs 50 per kg affecting consumers.
