Rs 8.09 crore for sports events across state

The state government has sanctioned Rs 8.09 crore to conduct various sports competitions for the Chief Minister’s Trophy, Education Minister K Pandiarajan said.

Pandiarajan was inaugurating swimming competitions and handing over prize money to the winners of various events at the SDAT (Sports Development Authority of Tamil Nadu) aquatic complex in the city. The minister said, competitions were being conducted at the district and state levels for the first time this year and the events, which included taekwondo, handball, swimming, weight lifting, gymnastics, athletics, judo, beach volleyball, fencing and boxing had venues at Tirupur, Chennai, Dindugal, Thanjavur, Madurai, Tiruchy, Namakkal, Nagapattinam and Virudunagar. 

The competitions which began on December 27 would conclude on January 29, he said and added that prize money included Rs 1 lakh for first place, Rs 75,000 for second place and Rs 50,000 for third place, with a total prize money of Rs 5.66 crore.
