Ravikumar questions differences in Shah’s statements on NPR, NRC

VCK general secretary and Villupuram MP D Ravikumar on Wednesday questioned the contradictions in the statement of Union Home Minister Amit Shah on National Register of Citizens (NRC) and National Population Register (NPR).

“Amit Shah says that there is no link between NRC and NPR, but his Ministry in a written letter submitted to Parliament has informed that NPR will serve as the mother database for creating NRC. The two statements from the same department contradict each other and we do not know which is true here,” said Ravikumar, in a tweet.

Recently, Amit Shah in a television interview said that NRC and NPR are entirely different and the recently passed Citizenship (Amendment) Act (CAA) will not be linked to NRC. He also echoed the statement of Prime Minister Narendra Modi that NRC will be implemented only in Assam and not in the entire country. The statement of Amit Shah was criticised by politicians as he contradicted the earlier statements made by his own Ministry in Parliament. Ravikumar also said that both NPR and NRC are the same. “Political parties in Tamil Nadu should understand that the NPR is nothing but NRC in disguise,” said Ravikumar.
