Rape victim commits suicide in UT

A 31-year-old woman committed suicide by setting herself on fire as she was allegedly raped by her employer.

According to the police, the woman Dhanalakshmi of Ariyankuppam was working in a studio at Chinnakkadi here. On Tuesday evening, she set herself on fire in her house. Immediately, she was rushed to a government general hospital here. However, she succumbed to her burns in the early hours of Wednesday.


Earlier, Judge Sivakumar took her dying declaration in which she said that the owner of the studio, Mathurai gave her cool drink laced with an intoxicating drug and raped her in January this year.


She clarified that Mathurai having a family with two children and as she do not want to spoil his family she did not lodge a complaint with the police then. But, now since her marriage was fixed, she took the extreme step as she do not want to cheat another man.


Following this, police registered cases against Mathurai and are on the look out for him who is said to be absconding.
