Rajiv case convict Arivu released on parole

A G Perarivalan alias Arivu, one of the seven life convicts in the former Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi assassination case, was on Tuesday released from Vellore Central prison on a month-long parole.

Perarivalan was granted 30 days’ parole (ordinary leave) to meet his ailing father and to attend his sister’s wedding in Krishnagiri.


He was shifted from Puzhal prison in Chennai to Vellore prison on Tuesday morning and after completing formalities, was released on parole, police sources said.


Perarivalan was escorted by a 15-member police team to his house at Jolarpet in a police vehicle, where he would be staying during the parole period.


Arrested in June 1991, Perarivalan along with the other convicts in the assassination case, were housed in the Vellore central prison from where he was shifted to the Puzhal prison as he was under treatment at the Rajiv Gandhi Government General Hospital for arthritis and kidneyrelated issues.
