Pudukai tree throws up 21 panchaloha idols during razing

As many as 21 panchaloha idols were unearthed from a farm at Peraiyur village in Pudukkottai district while attempts were on to uproot a tree from the land on Tuesday evening.

According to sources, Subban (56), who owns a farm near the Peraiyur Naganathar temple, was clearing off dried vegetation and trees in the property on Tuesday.


While attempts were on to uproot a big tree with the help of an excavator, Subban upon hearing a different sound from the ground, dug up the portion with the help of a spade. He was left surprised to see a collection of panchaloha idols and soon passed on information of the discovery to revenue officials and the Namanasamudram police.


Upon information, Tirumayam Tahsildhar Suresh rushed to the location, and workers continued to dig the spot to unearth as many as 21 idols of Vishnu, Siva, Parvathi, Murugan, Vinayagar, Natarajar and Manikavasagar.


Subsequently, the idols were taken into the custody of the Revenue department which had passed on the information to the Archaeological Survey of India, which as per protocol, is expected to receive the idols and estimate their value.
