‘Pressure cooker’ goes to Tiruchy Independent

While the AMMK lost its battle to win back the ‘pressure cooker’ symbol-which the party managed to popularise during the RK Nagar bypoll- for the upcoming elections from the Election Commission, the same symbol has now been allotted to an Independent contesting from the Tiruchy constituency on Friday.

The allotment came as a surprise to political observers and the public, but as a shock to the AMMK members who had treated the ‘pressure cooker’ as a “sentimental” symbol. Among the 24 candidates in the fray for the Tiruchy Lok Sabha constituency this time, R Ganesh contesting as an Independent bagged the sought-after symbol.

Meanwhile, the final list, after the deadline for withdrawing nominations came to a close, has political heavyweights like DMDK candidate Dr V Ilangovan and Congress candidate Su Thirunavukkarasar in the fray. The remaining 21 candidates, including AMMK’s Sarubala R Thondaiman, were considered as Independent candidates.
