Plea to defer bypoll dismissed

The Madurai HC Bench on Wednesday dismissed a petition seeking a direction to the ECI to either cancel or postpone the by-election to Tirupparankundram assembly constituency scheduled to be held on May 19.

The petitioner, KK Ramesh, who is contesting as an independent candidate in Tirupparankundram constituency alleged that political parties, including the ruling AIADMK, the DMK and AMMK were distributing cash to all the voters.

Though Independent candidates have brought the bribing of voters to the notice of the EC, the flying officials had not taken any action on the issue, he said in the petition. The petition came up for hearing, a vacation bench dismissed the petition and said the byelection will be held.
