Unusually, Sellur Kanmoi, which is under PWD control, in Madurai witnessed white foam floating on water. However, the unusual scenario in the Kanmoi attracted several people, who gathered at the spot and took selfies too. Su Venkatesan, Madurai MP and officials from Corporation Pollution Control Board (PCB) and PWD inspected the spot.

PCB authorities collected samples from the water pollutant in the Kanmoi for testing, sources said.

K Bose, Assistant Engineer, PWD, said the mix of sewerage in the rainwater through Kanmoi, where deposits of water hyacinth were also found, could have caused foam.

Initially, foam piled up but gradually it started floating and moving in the Kanmoi after surplus water from Anaiyur and Silayaneri Kanmois was let into Sellur Kanmoi. Venkatesan, Station Fire Officer, Madurai, said a car, which accommodated three of a family, got stuck underneath a rail bridge on Puttuthoppu road at 9.30 pm in Madurai on Friday.

According to Madurai Collector T. Anbalagan, the rainfall did not cause much damage, but a few places in the first ward of Madurai Corporation remain waterlogged following the downpour.

However, the Corporation personnel were engaged in draining out stagnant waters. In Virudhunagar district, the downpour caused inundation of nearly 40 hectares of paddy fields at villages of Allalpatti, Vallampatti and K. Nedunkulam of Kariapatti block, sources said. But, officials are ascertaining the extent of damage caused to agriculture crops.

In Theni, it was timely rain as it would certainly boost yield of rainfed crops such as maize, pulses such as black and gram green gram, cumbu, groundnut and cotton, sources said.
