After medical PG students studying in government colleges and trainee doctors protested with lot of requests to be fulfilled in 2017, one Kumaran filed a plea in Madras High Court requesting to stop the protest.

During the trial of the case, the incidents where government doctors are harmed by the relatives of patients were brought to light. Consequently, the Judges ordered security cameras to be installed in government hospitals, and adequate doctors to be appointed in the emergency ward. Moreover, questions about number of doctors and fund allotted for hospitals were raised.

The case was brought in front of bench containing judges N. Kirubakaran and V. Parthiban on Wednesday. They said that government hospitals should appoint two doctors in emergency ward. They added, “Government doctors receive remuneration equal to what a Sub-Inspector receives which is the reason for all the medicine graduates to opt for private hospitals. Teachers and professors receive higher pay. The sadder part is that judges’ assistants are paid higher than the doctors”.

So, the judges voiced their opinion that government doctors who work 24/7 should be paid at least as much as group-I officers. They also ordered the Tamil Nadu government to respond in two weeks in this regard.
