Passenger trips on goods vehicles to invite tough action

The licence of drivers and permits of vehicles will be cancelled if people and animals are transported in violation of rules, warned Vellore collector SA Raman.

Addressing media persons here on Monday, he said it had come to the notice of the authorities that vans and lorries were blatantly flouting rules and carrying people. Such vehicles would be seized. 

The decision to take stringent action was taken after a survey found that serious lapses on the part of vehicle owners, who were ferrying people in large numbers. Such practices were against the motor vehicle rules, he said. 

The survey was taken up after 10 persons were killed when the mini-van in which they were travelling overturned near the district border at Baluchetty Chatram in February, the collector said. The public should ensure their safety by travelling in licensed passenger vehicles, he advised. 

The use of goods vans and lorries for transporting people and animals, especially cattle, was against the rules, he added.
