The form for admission into primary class with the controversial question was circulated widely on social media. Perceiving it to be an attempt to impose Hindi, despite the ruling AIADMK government being firm on the two-language policy, a few political parties also condemned the incident.

The Thanthai Periyar Dravidar Kazhagam (TPDK) even announced a protest on Thursday, which they later withdrew, claiming this was a BJP conspiracy to impose Hindi in TN. “Those forms were issued in corporation schools in Sidhapudur and Singanallur. We came to know of this after a few parents informed us and we suspect it could be an old form issued to check whether any student was willing to learn hindi,” said TPDK general secretary K Ramakrishnan.

The party also sought the civic body to identify how such an application form was issued in the schools. When asked, Corporation Commissioner J Shravan Kumar clarified that it was a fake form. “The Corporation has not issued forms for schools. Students are being admitted either directly or online due to the pandemic. There is no hindi teacher in any of our 84 corporation schools,” Kumar said.
