There are 43 tolls present in National Highways in Tamil Nadu which collect fare to maintain the roads and infrastructure. The fare is based on the quality of the infrastructure.

It was reported that the tolls present in the 6 National Highways in Tamil Nadu,  have collected Rs. 1,500 crore from the year 2005 to 2016.

A private bus transport Chairman also said, "There is a increase in traffic especially between Perungalathur and Chengalpattu. The National Highways even after collecting heavy fare does not bother to regulate the traffic. Around 1 lakh vehicles cross the above route everyday. Owing to the continuous increase in petrol and diesel fare, this toll fare hike will not help us. The authorities should re-consider the toll fare hike".
