Motorist crushed to death as scrap lorry overturns at Erode intersection

A 58-year-old tobacco trader died after a speeding lorry toppled on him in Erode on Thursday.

According to the police, Palanisamy from Punjai Puliampatty in Erode was on his two-wheeler after buying groceries in Thasampalayam when the incident happened.


The lorry laden with carton scrap was bound to Bhavani Sagar. “While making a sharp turn at Thasampalayam, the lorry driver lost control of the vehicle and it toppled on Palanisamy. He was crushed to death beneath the lorry,” the police said.


Even though passers-by tried to help him, they couldn’t pull him out. Severely injured Palanisamy was rescued only after the lorry was removed by engaging machinery. Palanisamy, who was rushed to Sathyamangalam Government Hospital in a critical condition, died on the way.


The Punjai Puliampatty police have registered a case and further investigation is on.
