Miscreants desecrate Periyar statue in Ariyalur, DMK, DK cadres stage protest

Miscreants desecrated the statue of Periyar near Ariyalur on Thursday and police are on the lookout for them. The people from Samathuvapuram in Thelur panchayat near Ariyalur noticed tar poured on the bust sized statue of Periyar on Thursday afternoon.

As the information spread, DMK and DK cadres assembled on the spot and staged a protest demanding the arrest of the culprits. The cadres who gathered there suspected the involvement of a few right wing functionaries behind the incident. On information, Ariyalur police rushed to the spot and held an inquiry. A heavy posse of police has been deployed to avert any untoward incident.
