Man hurt in gunshot mistakes sound for phone blast near Vaniyambadi

A man living near Vaniyambadi, was injured in what was initially considered an explosion in his mobile phone, which later turned out to be a gunshot fired at him, on Saturday.

Police said Velayudham (42), a daily wage earner of Narayanapuram, near the Tamil Nadu-Andhra Pradesh border abutting Vaniyambadi was returning home after work on late Thursday evening when he suddenly heard a loud bang and fell on the ground. Neighbours, who noticed the incident, thought that his cell phone had exploded and rushed him to a private hospital nearby.

On examination of his mobile phone, it was found that two deep holes on the rear side, with the glass on the phone face, being smashed due to the impact. The officials also pulled out two pellets. Velayudham, who was injured in the jaw, was moved to the Vaniyambadi government hospital and the police were informed.

The latter registered a case and found that the wound was caused by a pellet fired from a country gun. They have pulled in two persons for questioning and further investigation is on.
