Earlier, Ramar and his wife Panju had fought with each other over a petty issue. On Saturday night Ramar forgot to place water for their cow. When Panju questioned him over it, Ramar asked back why she could not do the job herself. A verbal dispute ensued and intensified between them. An infuriated Ramar had slapped Panju.

Panju in turn started abusing her husband verbally. Ramar, in a fit of rage, took a sickle in the house and hacked his wife.  Panju fell unconscious and when Ramar checked on her, he mistook her to be dead. Feeling guilty for his act, Ramar rushed to the motor room in his farm and deliberately touched a live wire. He died of electric shock on the spot.

Meanwhile, neighbours hearing the commotion rushed to their house. On seeing the situation they called the ambulance service. Ramar was declared dead and Panju was immediately moved to the Madurai GRH. She has been admitted in the ICU.

Ezhumalai police had booked a case under section 307 of the IPC against Ramar for trying to murder Panju and 174 of CrPC for committing suicide.
