M G Ramachandran’s niece, grandson join BJP

On the day Deepa, Jayalalithaa’s niece, announced her entry into politics, Leelavathy, the daughter of MGR’s elder brother, and the latter’s grandson Praveen, entered politics by joining the BJP. It may be recalled that Leelavathy had donated one of her kidneys to MGR when he was hospitalised in Brooklyn in 1984.

On January 17 they joined the BJP in the presence of senior BJP leader and Union Minister Pon Radhakrishnan and BJP state president Tamilisai Soundararajan and senior leaders on the occasion of MGR’s birth centenary. They garlanded the MGR’s statue and formally joined the BJP and hailed the corruption free and transparent governance of Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

‘’Modi had been providing a clean government, the way MGR wished for. In a bid to strengthen his leadership, I am joining the BJP with the blessings of my grandfather and MGR,” Praveen told reporters. It may be recalled that Leelavathy’s selfless gesture in donating one of her kidneys to him had helped in stretching MGR’s life span by three years. Leelavathy, now 66, was barely 34 when the transplant surgery was performed on December 19, 1984.
