Police said Nirmala (24), daughter of farmer Sivaraman (55) and Chamundeswari (45), was pursuing a MA degree at the government arts college in Tiruvannamalai. 

A hosteller, she would come home for the weekends.

Anbazhagan (30), son of Rajavelu and a lorry driver, fell in love with Nirmala and wanted to marry her. Subsequently, Anbazhagan informed his parents, who approached Nirmala’s parents with the marriage proposal.

Her parents conveyed to them that they would decide only after Nirmala completed her studies. Anbazhagan was later informed that Nirmala’s parents were against the marriage.

Enraged over this, he waited for the weekend when Nirmala would be at her home.

On Friday night, Anbazhagan went to Nirmala’s house where he first attacked Sivaraman with a knife.

Thinking the man to be dead, Anbazhagan proceeded to assault both Chamundeswari and Nirmala. He then smothered them to death with a pillow.

Fearing police action, Anbazhagan hanged himself in the same house using a rope.

Neighbours who heard the cries of an injured Sivaraman rushed to the house.

They took him to the Vellore Government Medical College hospital and informed Santhavasal police who have registered a case. Vellore Superintendent of Police R Ponni visited the spot and held inquiries.
