Rajini (38) and Shanmugam (40), both sons of Swaminathan of Thandukanur village in Tirupatthur taluk, had a long running dispute over a property. During one such quarrel on April 22, 2013 an enraged Rajini attacked his brother with an iron rod.

When Shanmugam’s wife Selvi (35) and son Gajendran (8) intervened, Rajini attacked both of them and killed Selvi on the spot by hitting her on the head. Gajendran, severely injured, was rushed to the Tiruaptthur government hospital where he recovered after treatment.

Tirupatthur police registered a case and arrested Rajini. The case was heard by the Vellore Mahila court. Prosecution lawyer Lakshmipriya took over the case. Mahila Court judge M Selvam sentenced Rajini to life imprisonment for murder and slapped a fine of Rs 2000. Rajini was later lodged in the Vellore central prison.
